As the name suggests, Bacchanal Premium provided patrons with a high-quality experience at Wednesday’s staging at Hope Zoo in St Andrew. Themed ‘The Roaring Twenties’, band co-director Michael Ammar Jr says everything was executed according to plan.

“We thought that it fit the premium theme, because it’s a little different. It’s not anything anybody has done in a soca party before and it just looks very upmarket and that’s what we wanted to,” he told the Jamaica Observer‘s Splash.

White hair feathers, faux pearl necklaces, and ‘premium’ branded cups were some of the novelties available for patrons so they could “look the part” for the classy event. There was also an abundance of champagne, food options and even a cigar bar for those who turned out to dance to soca music all night. Music was provided by DJ Lantern MD, Matt Camps, Marlon Musique, and Travis World and Barrie Hype from Trinidad.

Historically, the Roaring Twenties was a period of economic prosperity with a distinctive cultural edge in the United States and Europe. It was driven by recovery from wartime devastation and deferred spending, a boom in construction, and the rapid growth of consumer goods such as automobiles.

Ammar Jr said the idea to amalgamate soca with a premium event was merely grounded in the band’s willingness to experiment.

“Bacchanal has always done the wrong thing which turns out to be right. When we started Beach J’Ouvert, they told us it was sacrilege because we were having J’Ouvert in the day. Premium is another event…we make it work with anything,” he said.

Bacchanal J’Ouvert will be underway tonight at Mas Camp in Kingston. It will be headlined by Patrice Roberts and Drue.

Ammar Jr promises an event better time ahead of Road March on Sunday.

“What you saw at Rum For Breakfast, and what you saw here is only about a quarter of what you’re gonna see at J’Ouvert…it’s gonna be spectacular. You can feel the energy in the building,” he said.
