MONTERREY, Mexico — During the last World Cup campaign Jamaica came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Haiti and advance to the next stage.

Jamaica entered that game needing a draw and got it. Four years on, both teams will meet again but this time the positions are reversed as Haiti now needs a draw and Jamaica must win.

Reggae Girlz Captain Khadija Shaw remembers that encounter clearly and said she has put that game behind her and is looking forward to a new challenge — and she believes the Haitians won’t be playing for a draw.

“This is football and every game you go out [to play] you wanna win; it’s not about drawing or whatever,” Shaw pointed out.

She continued: “Of course we drew the last game but that was not our aim. We wanted to win.”

Jamaica will meet Haiti on Monday, sitting in the third spot on three points with Haiti on second, also on three points, but with a better goal difference.

“The next game we look forward to, and it’s gonna be a big test for us. And if we do what we know we can do best, we should get the job done,” said a confident Shaw.

“We have one objective, that’s to qualify for the World Cup. So despite wherever we have been, we are here now and the only objective is to qualify for the World Cup,” she emphasised.

Shaw, Jamaica’s all-time top scorer for both males and females, notched her 53rd goal in Jamaica’s historic 1-0 win over Mexico but crashed 0-5 to the Americans.

Once again, she will lead the line against Haiti in what is now the most important game of the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship.

“Everyone saw what happened. We came out and won the game against Mexico and we didn’t win the game against USA,” Shaw stated.

“We’ve been down this journey before when we qualify for the World Cup — when we beat Panama we lost to the US. So, this is not new to us. It’s just to bounce back,” she declared.

“We know what’s at stake so it’s just to regroup, look at our mistakes, and hopefully not let it happen in the next game,” said the Manchester City striker.

“This is a team effort, it’s not just me. We are together as a group. We win together, we lose together. Just more encouragement and communication from everyone, the effort and hard work, and once we do that we will get the job done,” she reiterated.

However, the experienced Shaw knows that she will have her hands full and will have to be at her best to subdue the Haitians.

“They [Haiti] are a physical team. Despite whatever they always get the job done, and that’s a credit to them, and I think going into that game we just have to match that physicality and effort and play our style of play — and once we come out and do what we know best we can get the job done,” said Shaw.
