EUGENE, Oregon — More medals will be on offer on today’s fifth day of the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, with Jamaicans down to contest three finals — the men’s 400m hurdles, women’s high jump and the men’s discus throw.

Jaheel Hyde will line up in his first major final after he qualified for the men’s 400m hurdles medal round, and will be running at the same venue where he won the second of his back-to-back World Under-20 titles, eight years ago.

Hyde has made encouraging progress this season and it will take a lot to get on the medal podium today as he faces two of the best ever in the intermediate hurdles, The first is world record holder Karsten Warholm, the Olympic champion who ran back-to-back season’s best after suffering a leg injury a month ago. The other is Brasil’s Alison Dos Santos, who is the word leader with 46.80 seconds, while American Rai Benjamin has also run 47.04 seconds and his compatriot Trevor Bassitt ran his personal best 47.47 seconds this season.

National record holder and world number four Lamara Distin and national champion Kimberly Williamson will participate in the high jump and will hope to create history by making it to the medal round.

After clearing 1.97m this year, Distin has set her eyes on clearing 2.00m while Williams, who also set a personal best 1.93m this year, will seek to go higher today.

Fedrick Dacres and Traves Smikle will carry the Jamaican flag in the men’s discus throw final after qualifying on Sunday, and Dacres — who is coming back from an injured leg — admitted on Sunday to feeling some discomfort but said he had to block the pain and try his best.

Smikle has a season’s best 66.60m and has been consistent all year, going over 64.00 several times.

Meanwhile women’s 400m hurdles will start today and will see three competitors from Jamaica — Doha bronze medallist Rushell Clayton, Janieve Russell and Shian Salmon.
