Sunshine Girls defeat Wales 72-43 at Commonwealth Games
BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom – Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls got off to a winning start in the netball competition at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday, beating Wales 72-43 in Pool A at the NEC Arena.
The Sunshine Girls, who won the bronze medal when the event was last held in 2018 in Australia, were always in control and led 16-12 after the first quarter. They were up by 16 goals – 38-22 – at halftime.
The Jamaicans increased the margin to 24 at the end of the third quarter as they led 55-31.
Captain Jhaniele Fowler led from the front with 32 goals from 33 attempts, Shimona Nelson was perfect with 29 goals from 29 attempts, while Rebekah Robinson scored three from her five attempts.
The Sunshine Girls will be back in action on Saturday when they play South Africa at the same venue.
