Two more medals for Jamaica at Commonwealth Games

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom – Jamaica added two more medals to their Commonwealth Games tally after Discus thrower Traves Smikle and 110m hurdler, Rasheed Broadwell copped bronze and gold in their respective events at the Alexander Stadium on Thursday.

Broadbell represented Jamaica well after Olympic champion Hansle Parchment withdrew himself from the final hours before it was to be contested. The World Championships semi-finalist, Broadbell atoned for his appearance in Eugene, Oregon last month by running a Commonwealth Games Record and personal best 13.08 seconds to win the gold medal in the 110m hurdles.

Orlando Bennett, the other Jamaican to take part, finished fifth in 13.43 seconds.

Smikle, who had won the silver medal four years ago, took bronze this time with a throw of 64.58m with Roje Stona placing sixth with 62.15m.

Shawn-D Thompson just narrowly missed a medal in the men’s long jump.

Three Jamaicans are through to the final of the women’s 400m hurdles, Rushell Clayton who won her semi-final with 54.93 seconds, Shiann Salmon, who was also a winner with 55.30 seconds, and Jenieve Russell who ran 55.79 seconds.

In men’s doubles in squash, the Jamaican pair of Chris Binnie and Julian Morrison beat the St Vincent pair of Othneil Bailey and Jason Doyle 2-1 to move to the round of 16.

In table tennis, the pair of Kane Watson and Solesha Young were beaten 3-1 by the Ghanaian pair of Derek Abrefa and Cynthia Kwabi in the mixed doubles round of 64.

In diving Yona Knight Wisdom finished fifth in the men’s 1 metre springboard scoring 383.10 points, 63.95 points behind the winner Jack David Laugher who scored 447.05 points.

He will contest the 3 metre springboard on Saturday.
