WATCH: Shaneil Muir encourages young artistes to ‘wait their turn’
KINGSTON, Jamaica – “Wait your turn because your turn nah go come before its time.” That’s the advice of dancehall artiste Shaneil Muir, who recently made her debut on the internationally acclaimed Reggae Sumfest stage. Muir, who has experienced tremendous growth since being introduced to the music fraternity as a contestant on Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall in 2016, said she has learnt a lot about patience since then.
“You have to learn a lot while you can, when you can because music is not just I am having fun, there is a lot to it,” the Top Gyal artiste told OBSERVER ONLINE.
“There is a business part of music and then there is music in its practical state, so learn as much as you can, advance your knowledge on the business theory of music. Learn, learn, learn and then apply and go fi it. But, wait your turn because your turn nah go come before the time. That’s it.”
Highlighting that though she’s come a far way over the past six years, Muir says her journey is far from over and she’s anxious to see how far music takes her.
“Mi nuh think a journey ever ends, it just get better or worse and you decide which path you’re gonna take. For me, from Magnum stage to the Sumfest stage was a big thing because it shows me that I’ve been working and when you work you ago see your results,” she shared.
The Yamabella deejay who has been credited for her impeccable writing skills, says she tries her best to stay on top of her game. The latter includes voice training and writing sessions, where she doesn’t quit until everything is perfection.
“For me, I’m always singing. Me get up mi sing, mi probably all sing inna mi sleep. I do vocal exercises too so that’s definitely something I do to keep that voice in check. I don’t try to strain my voice I practice to perform and I try different tactics to preserve that sound,” she explained. “Also, when I write, sometimes it may take a little inspiration and a little knowledge of things here and there but when mi siddung and mi start, I don’t feel complete until that song is actually complete. Maybe me all will cross it up and tear it up and start all over because I’m a little bit of a perfectionist.”
Muir is currently promoting her new collaboration with Govana, called Mannaz. The track, which was released on July 3, has so far racked up more than 1.5 million views on YouTube.
