Caribbean Airlines to discontinue some flights, reduce operations in others

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Caribbean Airlines says it will discontinue flights to Dominica, St Kitts and the Ogle–Suriname corridor from June 1 as the Trinidad-based carrier pursues a codeshare agreement with an unnamed regional airline partner.

The airline said the move forms part of a “continued network adjustment strategy”, while flights to Martinique and Guadeloupe will be reduced to twice weekly.

Caribbean Airlines said it is working toward a codeshare agreement that will provide customers with access to “a wider network of destinations through coordinated schedules, seamless connections and integrated ticketing arrangements”, though it did not identify the proposed partner or indicate when the arrangement could be finalised.

The airline’s reference to a “continued” network adjustment strategy suggests Thursday’s announcement may form part of a broader restructuring review, although Caribbean Airlines provided no further details on the scope of the exercise.

Codeshare agreements typically allow airlines to expand network access through partner-operated flights while reducing duplication on thinner or less profitable routes.

Passengers affected by the cuts will be offered re-accommodation on alternative regional services where feasible, alternative itineraries through Caribbean Airlines and partner connections, refunds for the unused portion of their tickets, or the option to retain ticket value as future travel credit, subject to fare conditions.

The airline provided no route-level financial data, passenger volumes or load factor information explaining why the specific destinations were selected for removal or reduction.

The affected routes serve distinct regional markets. The Ogle–Suriname service links Georgetown, Guyana, with Paramaribo and supports trade and diaspora traffic between the two South American neighbours. Dominica, still rebuilding airlift capacity years after Hurricane Maria, has fewer regional airline options than larger Caribbean markets, while St Kitts operates within a more competitive tourism market with broader connectivity.

Caribbean Airlines said it remained committed to maintaining “strong regional connectivity through a sustainable and commercially responsible network”.

Until the codeshare partner is identified and the broader review disclosed, the full direction of Caribbean Airlines’ regional strategy remains unclear.
