Cornwall, Glenmuir lead daCosta Cup quarterfinal qualifiers

CLARENDON, Jamaica — Former champions Cornwall College and Glenmuir High led the qualifiers for the quarterfinals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after completing a clean sweep of their Round of 16 games on Saturday.

Cornwall College beat Garvey Maceo High 5-0 in Mocho, Clarendon, to finish atop Zone 1 with a maximum nine points. Glenmuir High also secured nine points from three matches after overcoming 10-man Manchester High 2-1 to top Zone 2.

Joining them in the quarterfinals are Ocho Rios High from Zone 1, Lacovia High and Denbigh High from Zone 3, and Munro College and McGrath High from Zone 4.

However, only seven of the eight quarterfinal places had been confirmed at the time of publication, with the second spot from Zone 2 still to be decided between Manchester High and Kemps Hill High.

Both schools finished level on four points, having recorded one win, one loss and one draw. They also scored four goals, conceded four and drew 1-1 in their head-to-head encounter. Kemps Hill strengthened their claim with an impressive 3-0 victory over outgoing champions St Elizabeth Technical, but the teams could not be separated by the first four tie-breaking criteria.

The final deciding factor will therefore be their disciplinary records, in accordance with ISSA’s Fair Play rules. Under the regulations, teams are assessed penalty points for disciplinary offences across all group matches. A yellow card attracts one point, an indirect red card three points, a direct red card four points, while a yellow card followed by a direct red card carries five points. The team with the lower total advances.

At Garvey Maceo, Shakeem Gibson and Aiden Earl both scored braces, while Marcane Gooden added the other goal as 12-time champions Cornwall College registered their fourth consecutive victory.

Cornwall scored 14 goals across the Round of 16 without conceding, although their opponents in Saturday’s encounter managed to find the net for the first time in regulation time this season.

At Glenmuir, all three goals came in the second half. Steve Hewitt broke the deadlock for the home team in the 49th minute before Orel Miller doubled the advantage eight minutes later. Samuel Smith pulled one back for Manchester High in the 90th minute, but Glenmuir held on for the victory.

In Zone 4, Kajaye Williams scored a hat-trick to lead Munro College to a 4-0 victory over Central High. The result lifted Munro to seven points, level with McGrath High, but they secured top spot on goal difference.

McGarth High were awarded points after Mannings School, who had lost back to back games by 4-1 margins, forfeited their game.

Ocho Rios High claimed the second qualifying spot in Zone 1 after edging 10-man Frome Technical 3-2 at Llandilo. The victory completed a remarkable turnaround for Ocho Rios, who entered the match with just one point after suffering a 6-0 defeat against Cornwall College and surrendering a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw with Garvey Maceo.

Frome, who had finished their Thursday encounter against Cornwall with only seven players, were reduced to 10 midway through the second half when Wayne Mullings received a red card.

In Zone 3, Denbigh High eliminated former champions Clarendon College with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a second-half strike from Lashawn Barnaby. The result secured second place behind group winners Lacovia High.

Lacovia bounced back from their Thursday defeat to Denbigh by edging Dinthill Technical 2-1. Omoy Cunningham and Orain Myers scored for Lacovia to ensure they finished the group stage on a winning note.
