SDC/Sandals Flanker Community Netball League climaxes Sunday
TRENDSETTER B and Pele Drive will clash in the final of the Social Development Commission (SDC) Flanker Community Netball League set for Sunday at the Flanker Courts, starting at 7:00 pm.
The evening’s set of matches will also feature a third-place play-off between Flanker United and Seaview Blazers, set to get underway at 6:00 pm.
The competition, which is organised by the Social Development Commission and sponsored by Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Caribbean, Tropical Bliss and Councillor Charles Sinclair, has been attracting hundreds of residents from Flanker and surrounding communities who come out to cheer on their favourite teams.
Nine teams, divided into two zones, participated in the competition which is a part of the joint Young Women Empowerment initiative — actioned by the SDC and Sandals Resorts in the Montego Bay region — to bring about melioration for young women within the area.
SDC Community Development Officer Ricardo Campbell is bubbling with excitement for what he anticipates will be a gripping finale.
“We expect two great matches on Sunday and we anticipate a large crowd on hand,” he noted. “The competition has been a tremendous success and has served as a motivational tool for the young women in the community,” he said.
Campbell added: “The SDC has a lot more in store for the community of Flanker, and not just in sports — we will be doing mentorship sessions and community drives to help bring about real change in this community, with the continuous support from Sandals.”
One such session was a Motivational Day when a number of local entities made presentations to the young people in the community.
“Sandals is proud to be the main sponsors of something that is as transformational and as entertaining as sports,” said Sandals Montego Bay General Manager Christopher Elliott.
“What we’re doing here with the SDC and the community is important to us as it represents our ongoing commitment to community involvement and support, and we look forward to seeing how far we can go and how many lives we can touch,” he went on.
