Skeng trends after Nicki Minaj collab and shoutout at MTV Music Video Awards
KINGSTON, Jamaica — It’s no secret that international superstar rapper, Nicki Minaj, has an undying love for Jamaica and its culture. Still, on Sunday night while giving her acceptance speech at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, Minaj did not hesitate to once again share that love with the world on an international platform.
After winning the Video Vanguard Award at Sunday’s show, Minaj sought to express gratitude to all the people who have inspired her career and ultimate ascension to the pinnacles of music. While heaping praises on people like Rihanna, Beyonce, Lil Wayne, and Drake, the Trinidadian-born entertainer also thanked Beenie Man and the people of Jamaica.
“All my Caribbean people, but Beenie Man, thank you for everything and all of Jamaica,” Minaj said, also hailing fast-rising dancehall star Skeng, with whom she recently collaborated.
“Skeng, wah gwaan,” she said to loud cheers and applause from the audience.
Hours after the brief shoutout, dancehall artiste Skeng was trending on twitter with fans of the deejay declaring that international success is on the horizon for the Protocol deejay.
“A Nicki feature is nothing SLIGHT. Big up Skeng he different wid it,” user natty kunda tweeted.
“Skeng: yesterday’s price is not today’s price,” another user, @RoshedoWilliams also posted to the platform.
Minaj recently added Skeng’s hit single, “Likkle Miss”, to her Queen Radio: Volume 1 great hits compilation, sharing the cover art for the remix on her social media early Sunday morning. Queen Radio: Volume 1 was released on Friday.
“Likkle Miss” produced by Droptop Records, was originally released by Skeng in early July, and the music video on YouTube for the track has already amassed nearly 2.7 million views. Since Minaj posted earlier this month that she was set to feature on the remix, the comments section on the popular streaming platform was flooded with testimonials of “Nicki Minaj brought me here” by listeners.
