Artesia scores for the fifth occasion
ARTESIA, in a performance that solidified her late development, stamped rivals in a three-year-old and upwards non-winner of an Overnight Allowance on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at Caymanas Park.
Trained by Richard Azan, Artesia (Omar Walker), who had two previous runs at this level during which she finished fourth and third, made light work of rivals in the seven-furlong (1,400m) contest as she came from behind to win by 7 ½ lengths.
Artesia left the starting gates well behind the pack, with the far-striding filly sitting in eighth place in the 15-horse field down the backstretch. Alexa’s Lodge (Oshane Nugent) led the field ahead of Big Big Daddy (Andre Powell), Three Times Lucky (Jerome Innis) and Raw Liquid (Roger Hewitt).
Artesia continued to race well off the pacesetters, coming into view approaching the half-mile (800m) turn when she slipped down into fourth place behind Raw Liquid, Alexa’s Lodge and Big Big Daddy.
Turning for home, Artesia came into the lane alongside Big Big Daddy but, in a flash, the grey filly sprinted clear to win the event by a wide margin, registering her third win for the season from 10 starts and fifth overall from 23 outings.
Bred by Sensational Slam out of the Left Banker mare Runaway Julie, Artesia won in a time of 1:26.1 ahead of Big Big Daddy and Storm, the mount of Dane Dawkins.
