Magic Medicine
THE organisers of Canex Jamaica Business Conference and Expo are now filming a documentary titled Magic Medicine as part of this year’s staging of the event which started on Thursday and will end on Saturday.
Douglas Gordon, founder of Canex, outlined the details to the Jamaica Observer.
“Magic Medicine is a documentary that will focus on cannabis and explore uses of cannabis and serve to educate people about the plant to help to destigmatise cannabis and really inform folks around all the different facets of the industry,” he said.
Gordon outlined that it will focus on everything from cultivation and historical use, the Rastafari traditions, all the way through to western modern science and approaches.
“So you are talking about business applications, scientific research and product formulation,” Gordon continued as he pointed out the documentary will not only highlight the history of cannabis, but help people to understanding how it became a prohibited plant and its tremendous health benefits and the economic benefits it holds for Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean.
“The documentary will interview a number of the experts who are attending Canex. It will also feature some of the indigenous and Rastafari leaders who can speak to the history of the plant. And so the documentary will have a very fulsome range of subject matter around cannabis and showcase that to the world,” he explained.
“The big thing to remember about this is, here is a plant that is really capable of changing so much in the world in a positive way, which is in many ways culturally associated with Jamaica.”
Gordon said to shoot this documentary in Jamaica for global consumption is to “take the work of the Peter Toshes and the Bob Marleys of this world who sort of established and then kept that flame burning to the cultural relationship between ganja and Jamaica and modernising that by incorporating its rich history and also speaking to its present and its future.”
He added that while filming is now ongoing, the release date “will be a function of when distribution is finalised and there are schedules for these things in terms of when it is advantageous to release these programmes.”
