Opposition says Latoya Bulgin killing “deeply troubling”
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) says the shooting death of Latoya Bulgin by a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force is deeply troubling and should raise several concerns among all well -thinking Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Opposition said the shooting, which took place in Granville, St James, on Sunday, raises serious questions about the use of lethal force by members of the security forces.
“ The unfortunate demise of Ms Bulgin, a citizen of Jamaica, must stir us to action and immediately implement the use of body-worn cameras by members of the security forces,” the PNP said.
They described the handling of Buglin’s body after she was shot as “disturbing”, especially since she was thrown in the back of a police jeep in the presence of other community members.
“This conduct falls below the respect that should be afforded to our citizens by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. We therefore call upon the High Command of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to ensure that the established protocols and procedures governing these sensitive situations are consistently adhered to and properly enforced by members of the force,” the PNP said.
The opposition is now encouraging community members who witnessed the incident to cooperate with the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) and provide a statement.
The member of the JCF involved in the incident has since been placed under interdiction by the Police High Command.
