KINGSTON, Jamaica – Saving what she described as “the best for the last”, Hanover Western MP, Tamika Davis, told her colleagues in the House of Representatives, Tuesday, that she wants her constituency to become a model to others.

“I declare that I am resolute in my commitment to see Hanover Western transformed into a flourishing example of social development and economic prosperity, and be a model constituency,” Davis said, as she spoke in the annual State of the Constituencies Debate at Gordon House.

She said that education continues to be her top priority, as it enables upward socioeconomic mobility, is a key means of escaping poverty and possesses implications for national development.

“This is why we provided well needed tuition assistance to sixth-form students and those at the tertiary level,” she explained.

“I was particularly pleased to be able to provide financial assistance to a mother of four, who was a victim of domestic abuse who was, as a result of this assistance, able to complete her studies in the area of practical nursing.

“She is now gainfully employed in her field and has regained power over her life. Through partnership with HEART Trust NTA, a total of sixty beauty care professionals received certification in their skill via their On The Job Certification Programme.

“I am a firm believer in the saying that encouragement sweetens labour, and have made it my point of duty to reward academic excellence of the youth in my constituency. Through a partnership with the Grand Palladium Hotel and the Ministry of Education Region 4, the top PEP students from each primary and preparatory schools were hosted at a function and awarded certificates, book vouchers and trophies for outstanding performances in each subject area.
