Paul Bogle sets record with 12-0 routing

Paul Bogle High were in record-setting mode on Wednesday as they thrashed Robert Lightbourne High School 12-0 in their ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup Zone L return-round game played at Paul Bogle High.

It was the biggest margin of victory for Paul Bogle High and the first time they had won their first six games as they closed in on a place in the second round.

Dinthill Technical also won a sixth straight game, beating Ewarton High 10-0, while Mannings School and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) also stayed perfect, winning their fifth games in a row.

Head Coach Winston Downie says it was close going, however, for Paul Bogle as the 2020 Ben Francis Cup finalists came very close to not taking part in the competition this season.

“Up to early June we were not sure if we would even be able to take part,” he told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. “We had no financial support and this team is really built on prayers.”

Downie singled out Principal Carey Kelly, who he said was the driving force and head of the management team, and Gary Fuller, who he said “had to go into his own pocket for us to be where we are now”.

Downie says they were “taking each game at a time, not looking too far ahead, but taking each team one day at a time”.

On Wednesday Maleik McFarlane scored a hat-trick to lead Paul Bogle, who had won the first-round game 3-1. Tyrell Mendez scored a brace while there were goals for Vashaun Daley, Ricardo Tyrell, Tyreek Stewart, Ricardo Perry, Oshane Dixon, Mark Baugh, and Jayden James.

It was the second time this season that Robert Lightbourne were losing by a double-digit margin after they lost 0-11 to Seaforth High earlier.

Dinthill Technical stayed on course for another perfect first round with a 10-0 battering of Ewarton High as Daniel Roberts led the way with five goals and Vashaun Douse scored two as well.

Mannings School came from a goal down to beat Grange Hill 3-1 at Mannings as Abena Wallace scored twice and Jarvin Williams got the other as they increased their lead in Zone D after Petersfield High were held 0-0 by Belmont Academy, snapping their perfect start.

STETHS were 2-0 winners over Lacovia High, who they had beaten in their first round.

Manchester High dropped points for the first time as they were held 2-2 by deCarteret College in Zone F, where Bellefield High blanked May Day High 3-0 with two goals from Renaldo Farquharson and one from Mark Rowe, while Belair also beat Mount St Joseph Catholic 3-0.

Happy Grove got their first win of the season, beating Port Antonio High 3-1 with goals from Sean Williams, Courtney Williams, and Alex Afflick 85 after Antwone Wilson had made it 1-1 for Port Antonio High just after halftime.

At Westmoreland Oval, Annotto Bay came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with St Mary Technical.
