Maverley’s Reid dedicates Major League win to club benefactor Raheem Sterling
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Loxsley Reid became one of the oldest men to score in the final of the KSAFA/Campari Major League when he got the second of his team’s three goals in a come from behind 3-2 win for Maverley/Hughenden over Mountain View FC at the Stadium East Field on Sunday.
Reid was named man-of-the-match for his box-to-box performance where he influenced the game significantly for his team in addition to scoring that crucial second equalizer at a pivotal time in the match.
The diminutive midfielder helped draw his team level at 2-2 in the match in the 70th minute, this after they had come from behind to level at 1-1 through the 43-year-old veteran, Jermaine “Tuffy” Anderson, who had done so in the 49th minute to erase a half time one-nil deficit.
After drawing level at 2-2, Maverley then managed to find the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute when Nicholas Scott scored what proved to be the match-winning goal.
Reid admitted to feeling overwhelmed after being named man-of-the-match while playing with players, some of whom were half his age and winning the title in a season where his team went unbeaten.
“I feel overwhelmed. At 42-years-old, playing in the Major League with so many young players and still able to match up with them…I feel joyful to win it, and win it unbeaten,” he said.
Reid also spoke of the positive impact the victory will have on the volatile community of Maverley.
“It’s unbelievable, honestly speaking it’s more than overwhelming. Winning this Major League title brings back joy in the community, because it’s a community where there is violence, but wherever football comes together, and we win titles…it brings back that unity in the community and that joy and I am overwhelmed being a part of it,” he said.
It was the biggest achievement in the sport of football for the veteran player and he described it as a “crowning glory”.
“That’s a crowning glory for me in my career. It’s a part of history for me,” he beamed.
Just before the start of the season, the club was gifted with gear from Raheem Sterling, a son of the community of Maverley/Hughenden, through his personal sponsor New Balance, and Reid was quite happy for that gesture, which had a massive impact on the club winning their second Major League title to go along with their lone Super League crown.
He dedicated the victory to the England international, who plays for Chelsea Football Club in the English Premier League.
“It’s a joy getting the help from Raheem Sterling because the club needed it,” he said.
“He saw where we needed it and it’s a joy to have the help from him, knowing that he is from the community, and he can help a lot with the community and towards the club. This victory is dedicated to Raheem,” he added.
Reid helped his team to take home $700,000, the cash prize for winning the Major League title.
