‘It Takes Two’ rapper Rob Base dies at 59
American rapper Rob Base, best known for the iconic hit It Takes Two with DJ EZ Rock, died on Friday after a battle with cancer, according to an announcement on his social media page.
Base, real name Robert Ginyard, was 59.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world,” the statement read.
“Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten,” it continued. “Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives.”
Base and recording partner DJ EZ Rock formed a trailblazing duo from Harlem who are recognised as pioneers of rap’s crossover success.
Released in 1988, It Takes Two was a smash hit, reaching No 3 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart. It has been certified platinum by the RIAA.
In the decades since its release, the song has become a staple on party dance floors, and was ranked number 37 on VH1’s 100 greatest songs of hip hop.
DJ EZ Rock, whose real name was Rodney Bryce, died in 2014 due to complications from diabetes.
