A Supreme Court judge on Wednesday told prosecutors to move quicker in making full disclosure of documents to ensure that St Mary brothers Nigel and Nicholas Walters, who are charged with four counts of murder, face trial soon.

Alongside the murders, both were also charged with illegal possession of firearm and robbery with aggravation.

The charges stem from an incident in which two women were murdered in Westmoreland on Wednesday, January 12 and another incident in which a Chinese couple was shot dead in Bellevue District, St Elizabeth, on December 23, 2021.

After declaring that additional statements from the arresting officer were still outstanding, the prosecution proposed that a November 24 date be set for case management.

The judge responded, saying, “The last occasion when this matter was before the court was June 2, 2022. The court was told that there was an outstanding statement and the Communication Forensics and Cybercrime Division (CFCD) report in respect of the surveillance footage. The court made note that all outstanding documents were to be submitted and disclosed by July 29, 2022. One of the alleged incidents took place in 2021. We are almost ending 2022. Everything must be ready for the case to be tried. We want to ensure that this trial takes place in a reasonable time.”

Both men were remanded until November 24.

In December 53-year-old Shiyun Shu and 48-year-old Haikong Wan were shot dead during a robbery at their supermarket in Bellevue. Close-circuit television footage showed three men entering the supermarket posing as customers shortly before the two were murdered.

In the second incident it is alleged that the brothers again posed as customers, but this time at a wholesale in Westmoreland. Sophia Brown, a 45-year-old businesswoman, and 58-year-old Bernie Lewis were assisting the men when both women were shot dead.

Police investigations resulted in the brothers being charged.
