Yarek Carnegie on a Manchester mission in D’Cup
MANCHESTER, Jamaica —Yarek Carnegie scored his 19th goal of the ISSA/WATA DaCosta Cup season to help Manchester High maintain their unbeaten run and win Group B of the quarterfinal round when they defeated the Manning’s School 2-1 at the STETHS Oval on Tuesday.
With the game finely poised at 1-1 and the incentive of winning the group meaning avoiding many-time champions and red-hot favourites Clarendon College in the semi-finals, Carnegie found the winner when he rounded Ashawni Campbell in the Manning’s goal and slotted home into an empty goal in the 68th minute.
Carnegie was still in primary school the last time Manchester High School played in the semi-finals of the DaCosta Cup and while he is happy that they have reached the final four for the first time in seven years, he says that the mission is still incomplete.
“I am very happy for where we are now and what we have achieved, but we are not finished yet. We still have a long way to go,” he stated.
Carnegie, who was voted the most valuable player of the match, credits the hard work that they have been doing at Manchester to reach where they have so far but is determined to make it to the December 3rd final.
“I think we are the hardest working team in the competition. We train the hardest, we put in the most work and this was always expected. To reach the final is where we are looking to go,” he said.
The bonus for making the DaCosta Cup final four is participation in the Champions Cup and Manchester High will be making their long-awaited debut in that competition.
Carnegie was voted the most valuable player of the match for his performance.
“I am very happy. It’s my first time going into the Champions Cup. I have always wanted to go there but it’s happening now, I am very happy.”
In the first round of the Champions Cup, DaCosta Cup teams will face Manning Cup teams and when asked if he had a preference of which team they play against, Carnegie said no.
Manchester High are one of the two seeded DaCosta Cup teams in the Champions Cup draw by virtue of winning their quarter-final group and will face either Mona High or St Andrew Technical High School. Who they face will be known after the draw is conducted tonight.
