Vote for Jamaica, Senator Morris
Dear Editor,
Generation 2000 (G2K) calls on Opposition senator and People’s National Party Youth Organisation (PNPYO) President Gabriela Morris to support the extension of the states of emergency (SOEs).
G2K, the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party, is calling on Senator Morris to let good sense prevail and vote for the extension of the SOEs in selected parishes across the island where there has been a significant surge in crime.
G2K reminds Senator Morris that, as a daughter of St James, which has an incredibly high volume of crime, and a well-thinking Jamaican appointed to serve the public, she has an obligation to act within the best interest of the Jamaican people.
The security forces, inclusive of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force, have recommended to the Government that SOEs be declared in the parishes of Westmoreland, St James, Hanover, St Catherine, Clarendon, Kingston and St Andrew, where criminal activity is on the rise. G2K believes that it is imperative to have a united voice in tackling this disease that is negatively affecting the lives of law-abiding citizens.
Whereas the Lower House has approved an extension of the SOE, the law requires a two-thirds majority in the Upper House for the Act to take effect. Therefore, we are imploring Senator Morris to support the combined national efforts of the Government and the security forces and vote for an extension in the interest of ordinary Jamaicans whose freedom has been undermined by violence producers.
G2K sees this as an ideal opportunity for Senator Morris to demonstrate her political autonomy and put the Jamaican people ahead of the PNP’s imprudent agenda.
