Back to business as usual for taxi operators
Dear Editor,
In the aftermath of the disruption to the transport system by bus and taxi operators they have resumed their unlawful behaviour. They have resumed showing the public why the Government was right in not granting them the amnesty they sought.
It spoke volumes that the commuters who depend on the buses and taxies did not support their amnesty efforts. This is because everyone is aware of the shenanigans bus and taxi operators get up to on the roads. They drive as if they have the immunity of Jesus the Christ in the front seat beside the three people they carry in the passenger seat.
If the Government had granted the operators an amnesty, it would have been tantamount to a parent giving candy to a child who had just spat on them.
The bus and taxi associations should tell their members that they are not a law unto themselves, and they should respect the lives of their passengers and other motorists. It is ridiculous that these associations are seeking pardons for their unruly members who have racked up hundreds of unpaid traffic tickets and continue to be a menace on the roads.
The country has recorded an unprecedented 419 traffic fatalities so far this year, with over a month left in the year. This is testament to the lawlessness being perpetuated on the nation’s road, led by bus and taxi operators. There has been an unbelievable number of accidents and near misses caused by bus and taxi operators breaking the law and inconveniencing the public.
The Government should go a step further to revoke the licence of those operators who, by their actions, show that they are a danger to themelves and the society. Pressure should be placed on the operators to obey the rules of the road, not only by the police but also the commuters whose lives are at risk.
The Christmas season, otherwise known as the silly season, is upon us, and in an effort to be able to “floss” the operators’ true colours will be shining as they create mayhem on our roads. They can’t be allowed to carry on like this, something must be done.
Motorists are sick and tired of these unruly bus and taxi operators.
