Feeling the Single Girl Blues
A song speaking to the frustration of dating currently occupies the number two spot on the Rebel Vibez Top Ten Canadian Reggae chart.
Single Girl Blues by singer Blk Orchid and singjay Empress Divine has been making waves in reggae circles in Canada since its release last August. It entered and peaked at number 18 on the Canada iTunes Reggae Singles chart.
Blk Orchid (Renee Brown) and Empress Divine (Natasha Heslop) are both of Jamaican parentage. They reside in Toronto, Canada.
“We feel very blessed to have reached this achievement. We are very proud of this song and the love it has received all over,” Blk Orchid told the Jamaica Observer.
“We are both solo artistes, respectively, and we came together to produce and write this track. The song came about after feeling frustrated with dating. I just felt like it would be a relatable song that I could write that everybody could listen to, whether you’re a young or old man or woman. It is distributed by VPAL under our own independent labels, Blk Orchid Productions and Empress Divine Production,” said Blk Orchid.
Blk Orchid explained how her journey began in music.
“Music began for me at church like most musicians. My father would take me along to his group rehearsals and later I would sing in the choir and sing and compose and write songs for a trio that I was singing in at the time. It has been quite the journey with my music, it’s been almost 20 years since I’ve been chasing this. I started producing in 2004 after the birth of my daughter and professionally for the last seven years. I put my musical aspirations on hold for a while to take care of my family after being a wife and a mother at a young age, and after my divorce and deciding to quit health care after 12 years of being in the field to pursue music full time, it has finally paid off in a big way,” she said.
“I feel I bring a different vibe to our culture where I am inspired by different genres of music such as R&B, pop and hip hop and I fuse all of them together to make my own sound in my productions. I produce for myself and other people and I think it’s a sound that you should be looking out for in 2023,” she continued.
Blk Orchid, who said she has visited Jamaica at least five times, has worked locally with producers including Sly Dunbar and Shams the Producer.
She plans to release her debut album in the spring.
