Bail extended for Robert Chin in $90m drug bust

Robert Chin, the man implicated in the recent multimillion-dollar cocaine find at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston had his bail extended when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday.

Chin, 56, of Mona in St Andrew, was nabbed in January and charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, attempting to export cocaine, and conspiracy to export cocaine following the seizure of 12 kilogrammes of cocaine.

Chin, who is the brother of member of parliament Mikael Phillips, is to return to court on February 15 when details regarding the variation to his bail conditions will be heard.

He was granted bail on January 6, in the sum of $700,000 on humanitarian grounds, after the court was told of his health condition and needing dialysis.

On Friday, the prosecution informed Parish Judge, Justice Paula Blake-Powell, that they are now in possession of several documents that were outstanding.

The court was told that they have received a statement from the police’s scene of crime, statements from two scene of crime officers, a statement from the investigating officer— who was present in court— a statement from court security, and a document detailing the investigatory timeline.

The documents that are still outstanding include a further statement from the scene of crime officers, two statements from the corroborating officers, and a statement from the aviation manager.

When the 56-year-old accused returns to court later this month, the defence team on the case will be given partial disclosure.

The court also ordered that on March 29, the case will be mentioned again to ascertain if all the outstanding documents are on file.
