Football coach’s bail altered to allow travel for work
ST JAMES, Jamaica— A football coach who was arrested after identity information was discovered on his cell phone has had his bail conditions altered to accommodate travel for work. His lawyer successfully made the application in the St James Parish Court on Tuesday.
Desroy Anderson was before the court to answer charges of breaching the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act.
He was arrested on February 28, 2022 during an operation on Chester Avenue in St James.
According to the police, they went to Anderson’s house with a search warrant in his name. While there, the police allege, men were seen gambling in a back room.
The house was searched and US$21,000 and three mobile phones were found. One of the phones was found to contain personal information of persons residing overseas, the court was told.
On Tuesday Anderson’s lawyer, Martyn Thomas requested that the reporting requirements be removed or reduced to one day per week. The lawyer noted that his client, a football and track and field coach, is often required to be out of the parish.
Presiding parish judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley waived the reporting obligation and extended Anderson’s bail until September 21.
