Rhoden is new J’can men’s indoor 800m record holder
KINGSTON, Jamaica – There is a new Jamaican men’s indoors 800m record holder after Tarees Rhoden of Clemson University ran 1:46.61 seconds to win the event at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) indoor championships in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday.
The former Kingston College runner who was competing for Clemson University, broke the 1:46.70 seconds set by Alex Morgan in Indianapolis in 1996 and surpassed his previous best of 1:47.89 seconds that he ran earlier this year and was winning the event in back -to -back seasons.
His time was also a Facility Record, besting the 1:50.06 seconds set earlier this year by the University of Michigan’s Cole Johnson.
Outdoor record holder Navasky Anderson ran 1:46.58 seconds in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this month but that time was achieved on a 300m track and cannot be recognised as a national record under World Athletics rules.
