WATCH: ‘God is good’ – Hydel high coach Corey Bennett marvels in historic Champs title
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – Following a nail-biter that ended with his charges capturing the school’s first girls’ athletic championships title, Hydel High track and field head coach Corey Bennett is revelling in the success.
Bennett, who is also the coach of Calabar High, not only danced and sang during his celebrations, but also gave praises to the Most High, quoting Psalm 23 in the process.
“I want to tell everybody today that God is good. And even when we never thought we could do it, we did,” Bennett said during Monday’s celebration at the St Catherine based school.
On Saturday, Hydel High became the 13th school to win the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletic Championships title when they dethroned Edwin Allen by a mere two points after 46 finals and five days of competition that started on Tuesday. In the boys’ section, Kingston College secured their 34th title.

Bennett hailed the athletes and support systems that have been a part of the school’s journey throughout the years.
“I need to big up all the persons who’ve gone forth because I cannot ignore it,” Bennett said, while highlighting former athletes such as Ashanti Moore, Shiann Salmon, Kerrica Hill, Brianna Lyston, Garriel White and past parents.
Last year, Edwin Allen won their eighth straight girls’ Champs title with 352 points, while Hydel finished second with 295 points.
