#Champs2023: Hydel High wins first Girls’ Champs title; KC wins 34th in the Boys’ section

KINGSTON, Jamaica— Hydel High won their first ISSA Girls’ Championships title and Kingston College won their 34th Boys’ title after the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday at the National Stadium.

Hydel High became the 13th school to win the Girls title when they dethroned Edwin Allen by a mere two points after 46 finals and five days of competition that started on Tuesday.

Edwin Allen’s run came to an end after they were disqualified in the Girls 1600m Sprint Relays after they had won and that gave the Corey Bennett coached Hydel the edge they were looking for and they obliged by placing second in the final event, the 4x400m Relays, ironically behind Edwin Allen.

Hydel High who only started competing at ‘Champs 13 years ago, became the 13th school to win the Girls title, joining St Hildas High, Manchester High, St Andrew High, Titchfield High, Mannings School, Vere Technical, Excelsior High, St Mary High, The Queens School, St Jago High, Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen.

Kingston College’s was way less dramatic and they wrapped up the victory hours before the championships ended, tallying 366 points to Jamaica College’s 299; Calabar High were third with 207, St Jago high placed fourth with 118.5, St Elizabeth Technical were fifth with 116 points.

Edwin Allen placed sixth with 65 points, followed by Wolmers Boys-60.5, Excelsior High- 65, Maggotty High- 46 and Cornwall College 31, filling out the top 10.

The girls top 10 teams were – Hydel High- 279, Edwin Allen High- 277, Holmwood Technical- 202, St. Jago High-178, St. Catherine High- 116 , Wolmer’s Girls School-111, Immaculate Conception- 94, Excelsior High, 74.50, St. Elizabeth Technical- 45.50, Mount Alvernia High- 39
