I Am Fred too classy for field in The Viceroy Trophy feature
In what is easily his best-ever performance on local soil, American-bred I Am Fred delivered another scintillating run to put away the best on offer and win The Viceroy Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Travelling one mile (1,600m) for the $1.5-million three-year-old and upward Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest, the Jason DaCosta-conditioned I Am Fred surrounded horses entering the lane and easily put away champion stayer Calculus and top-rated Mahogany by two lengths at the wire.
With Lewis asked to do riding duties aboard the five-year-old bay gelding, I Am Fred was smartly away at the start of the race and settled in third place behind stablemate King Arthur (Javaniel Patterson), who pressed Mahogany (Dane Dawkins) on the front end.
Nothing much changed in terms of running order down the backstretch as King Arthur continued to run the rabbit on the lead, taking Mahogany out of his comfort zone all the way, with I Am Fred stalking the leaders in close touch.
As Mahogany surged to the front going into the half-mile (800m), Lewis let loose the notch aboard I Am Fred, and the far-string runner went in chase of the leader and joined Mahogany on the lead approaching the distance.
I Am Fred hit the front full of running entering the drive, turned on the afterburner, and went about his business to register his third consecutive victory from as many starts this season. Bred by Golden Lad out of the Rock Slide mare Happy Hailey, I Am Fred stopped the clock in 1:38.2 (24.0 x 46.4 x 1:12.0).
Meanwhile, Rhythm Buzz, under a brilliant ride from Anthony Thomas, won the $1.02-million Simply Magic Cup, a Restricted Allowance II event for native-bred three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward (maidens) over one mile.
The Vincent Atkinson trainee came from behind horses to beat Aria’s Reign (Jordan Barrett) and All For Love (Dane Dawkins) by 1 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:41.1. Thomas had earlier booted home Scooby in the fourth race for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Azan for a double.
Also with two winners on the 10-race programme were trainer Anthony Nunes and jockey Tevin Foster. The duo teamed up with Anchorman in the second race and City Hawk in the final event on the day.
Racing continues today with a nine-race programme. First post is at 12:15 pm.
