Opposition calls for update on SSL fraud probe
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Opposition People’s National Party is calling on law enforcement officials to provide an update on the status of investigations into the massive fraud uncovered at Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL).
In a release on Wednesday, Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Julian Robinson, said, “It is critically important that the public be kept abreast of the progress being made by law enforcement officials in this important case. While it is in the public domain that one individual has been arrested and charged, we want to know whether other persons are being pursued and the status of those probes.”

Robinson said it is important to note that the hundreds of investors who were fleeced of their monies, have no idea whether they will be repaid and have received no communication at all about the ongoing probe.
“Timely communication is important in restoring public confidence in the financial services sector, which was rocked by the SSL fraud”, Robinson added.
The fraud case, which came to light early January 2023, involved the accounts of about 40 investors. It quickly gathering steam after news emerged that among the investors was Jamaica’s sprint hero Usain Bolt, who is reported to have lost just over US$12 million.
Later, a former employee of the company, Jean-Ann Panton, appeared in court on a number of charges related to the fraud case. She has since been remanded. SSL has been put under the supervision of the Bank of Jamaica and a revamped Financial Services Commission, as investigations continue.
