Mexico urges US thaw with Cuba, Venezuela to stem migration
MEXICO CITY, Mexico, (AFP) – Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called Thursday on the United States to resolve its differences with Venezuela and Cuba to reduce flows of undocumented migrants from the two countries.
“How can harmony, peace and tranquility be maintained if there are differences, if there’s confrontation?” the leftist leader said, urging Washington to seek diplomatic solutions.
Lopez Obrador said he had stressed to Biden when they spoke on Tuesday the need to address the root causes of migration in Latin America and the Caribbean, where “there’s a lot of poverty and abandonment.”
He was speaking as migrants gathered at the US-Mexican border ahead of the end of pandemic-era border restrictions at midnight on Thursday.
The United States has imposed an embargo since 1962 on Cuba, which is mired in its worst economic crisis in three decades, and maintains tough sanctions against Venezuela.
