Clunis, Cameron set meet records in Canada
JAMAICA’S World Athletics Championships hopefuls Nayoka Clunis and Lloydricia Cameron broke meet records at Sunday’s Victoria International Track Classic at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, British Colombia in Canada.
Two days after she set a new personal best 71.18m while placing second in the women’s hammer throw at Friday’s 40th staging of the Harry Jerome Classic held at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley, British Colombia, Clunis won the event on Sunday with 71.11m.
She took only four of her six throws and broke the meet record 69.80m set in 2014 by American Jessica Crosby. Clunis’s compatriot, Central American and Caribbean Games silver medallist Erica Belvit was fourth with 67.49m.
On Friday Clunis had broken her previous best of 71.13m set a month ago at the Iron Wood Classic in Rathdrum Idaho.
The new lifetime-best mark moved her closer to the national record 71.48m set by Daina Levy in 2016 and also helped to enhance her chances of being named in the Jamaican team to the World Championships. She is ranked 22nd in the World Ranking Quota, where the top 36 throwers are allowed to contest the World Championships.
Earlier this month, Clunis won her fourth national title at last weekend’s Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) national championships.
Meanwhile, Cameron won the women’s shot put with 16.97m, breaking the 31-year-old record of 16.92m set in 1992 by American Pam Dukes.
On Friday, Cameron, who is also in the World Ranking Quota in the shot put, threw a season’s best 17.14m for second place at the Harry Jerome Classic. She bettered the 17.00m distance twice in the competition and for the first time this season.
