Michigesso checks out The Rock
While long exposed to Jamaican culture in her home town of Toronto, Megan Soo never experienced the energy of a dancehall jam until July 24 when she attended Uptown Mondays in Kingston.
She shared with the Jamaica Observer that the spontaneity was everything she expected and more.
“It was great! Everybody was dancing and having a good time, it was really great to see,” the singer/actress shared.
Megan Soo trip to Uptown Mondays was with E-Dee, the Jamaican deejay/actor with whom she collaborates on Michigesso, her latest song and first crack at dancehall music.
Originally from Clarendon, E-Dee also lives in Los Angeles. He has released three albums and appeared in several movies including Out The Gate, Gangland and Mother In Law.
Though based in Los Angeles for the past year, Megan Soo has Korean and Trinidadian heritage.
This, her maiden trip to Jamaica, is with the main objective of being able promote Michigesso and so attending one of the many weekly dances in Kingston was a must.
“In Toronto, you hear the music in the clubs, and in LA, the [dancehall] scene is pretty small. I wanted to see the culture close-up; the dancers and how people reacted to my song,” she said.
The artiste is from Scarborough, a city in the Greater Toronto Area with a vibrant Caribbean community. Still, visiting Trinidad and Tobago numerous times has strengthened her appreciation for that region’s culture.
