Jamaicans impress at Luxembourg athletics meet
Jamaicans Amoi Brown, Jonielle Smith, and Kishane Thompson all produced impressive performances at Sunday’s Meeting International Schifflange — a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event — at Stade Jean Jacoby in Luxembourg.
They all set meet records and were among four Jamaican winners — the other was high jumper Christoff Bryan.
Brown, who was fourth at Jamaica’s athletics championships in early July, clocked 12.73 seconds (1.7m/s) to win the 100m hurdles, beating South Africa’s Marion Fourie (12.82) and American Talie Bonds (12.86).
This was Brown’s third-fastest time ever as she established the meet record.
Smith clocked 11.18 (1.6m/s), her second-fastest time of the season, to win the women’s 100m. She beat the meet record 11.20 set by Great Britain’s Kristal Awuah in 2018.
Jamaican women filled the top six places in the race as Smith was followed by Serena Cole (11.25), while Krystal Sloley ran a personal best 11.30, her third lifetime best this year; Tina Clayton 11.44; Jura Levy 11.45; and Tia Clayton 11.50.
Thompson dipped under 10 seconds for the second time in his very short career after he ran 9.99 (0.9m/s) in the first round, under the meet record 10.11 seconds set by Julian Wagner of Germany in 2021.
He, however, did not show up for the final.
Bryan won the men’s high jump after he cleared 2.19m, beating Joel Clarke-Khan of Great Britain who also cleared the same height. Saad Hammouda of Morocco was third with 2.10m.
This was Bryan’s final opportunity to cement a place in the top 36 in the world to get into the World Championships via the World Ranking Points system, and he might have to wait and see if he can still sneak in.
Malik James King was second in the men’s 400m, running 46.11 to win his section. Javon Francis was ninth overall after running 46.88 seconds for fourth in his section, while Wendell Miller also ran 47.92 seconds.
