Jamaica secure regional U-19 cricket double
Jamaica defeated Barbados by 56 runs in the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 men’s three-day final at Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Tuesday.
The result ended Jamaica’s decade-long wait for success in the three-day competition, and handed them the regional double this season after they lifted the 50-over crown in July.
“It’s a feeling I can’t describe; I’m totally elated,” Jamaica Head Coach Terrence Corke said during a post-match interview on Tuesday.
Scores: Jamaica 269 (108.4 ovs) & 87 (31.4 ovs); Barbados 158 (56.1 ovs) & 142 (61.2 ovs).
After securing a significant 111-run first-innings lead, the Jamaicans resumed on the final morning on four without loss in their second innings but they were dismantled for only 87.
Steven Wedderburn was the top scorer with 39, while Reon Edwards made 20. For the Barbados team, Saurav Worrell, with 4-14, and Raneico Smith (3-11) were the chief wicket takers.
Chasing 199 runs to claim an unlikely come-from-behind victory, the Barbadians fought gamely but were bowled out for 142.
Joshua Dorne led the way with 34, while Zion Brathwaite scored 28. Jamaica’s spinner Tamarie Redwood grabbed 4-47 to finish with seven wickets in the match. Pacer Edwards took 3-31.
Earlier in the match, Jordan Johnson stood out with 120 and fellow left-hander Brian Barnes struck 61 to lift Jamaica to 269 in their first innings, as Nathan Sealy finished with 5-64 for Barbados.
Jamaican pacer Deshawn James, who snared 5-21, and Redwood (3-56) then combined to limit Barbados to 158 all out. Nimar Bolden made 37.
