KINGSTON, Jamaica – Opposition Spokesperson on Local Government and Sports, Natalie Neita Garvey, says the performance of Jamaica’s Women’s Football team, Reggae Girlz, at the World Cup in Australia was outstanding and indicates an exciting and glorious future for the sport in Jamaica.

Neita Garvey, in a statement on Wednesday, said that although losing to Columbia in a close game Tuesday, the achievement of reaching the Round of Sixteen was a watershed moment not attained by any Caribbean team in eighty-five years.

“The team, therefore, deserves the highest commendation, and my hope is that the government will find appropriate ways of recognising the achievement by the contingent of ladies who represented Jamaica”, she said.

She said Jamaica’s application and tenacity were on full display in all games, as they conceded only a single goal in all their matches. This, she said, forms a secure platform on which to build as they go forward to other commitments for Jamaica.

Neita Garvey said the whole nation beamed with pride and high expectations for the team’s performance. She also stated that the team’s technical team and officials, as well as the Jamaica Football Federation, should share in this moment of national pride.
