Hot Wata scorches
It was a melting pot of musical sparks that ignited Footprints Café in New Kingston last Wednesday night as vocal trio Kuzikk launched its début EP titled Hot Wata.
With the veteran and experienced Skool band performing backing duties, the outfit, which comprises Kool Johnny Kool (Dalbert Wright), Krysi Webb (Krystal Webb), and Kamau Imhotep (Horace Morgan) performed songs from the project in a jam session which saw patrons, members of the media, and supporters rocking from start to finish.
Hot Wata, which was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, has six songs, including the title track, Fly Away, Too Black, Just Wanna Move, Chains, and Pens and Reggae Town.
They were produced by Paul “Computer Paul” Henton for Boot Camp Records.
Among the musicians who lent their talent to the project are Earl “Chinna” Smith and Dean Fraser.
“There’s a synergy between all three of us. Our music is indescribable. We sing whatever comes from our heart,” Krysi Webb disclosed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer shortly after the group’s performance.
Kamau Imhotep concurred.
“It’s just a natural energy when it comes to what we produce. We hang out a lot together and it’s just a melting pot of talent coming together to create reggae music. Music is our thing, we just a play music,” he said.
“Every time that we link up to do music a certain thing comes over you. You just can’t hold it back,” said Kool Johnny Kool.
Both Kamau Imhotep and Kool Johnny Kool were solo acts prior to linking up with Krysi Webb, who cut her grit as a background singer for several acts.
Said Kool Johnny Kool: “We linked up with Krysi through mutual friends who introduced us. Kamau and I grew up in the same community, so we knew each other. When we decided to come up with a name, we thought about music and we used the letter K, which was in our names, so that’s how Kuzikk came about.”
Hot Wata was released on August 11.
