Shericka turns attention to half-lap event after 100m silver
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Few would have bet against Shericka Jackson in the women’s 100m final on Monday night at National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary, especially after she ran a world-leading 10.65 seconds to retain her Jamaican national title in July.
With the expected improvement Jackson was expected to maybe go under 10.60 seconds — and nothing she did in the first two rounds dispelled those predictions.
She was, however, caught by American gold medallist Sha’Carri Richardson who beat her in four of their five meetings this year. Jackson ran 10.72, her third-fastest time ever, while her compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.77) was third.
Jackson had got the better of Richardson in the semi-finals when the American had finished third and had to sweat out a wait in the “q room” before her place in the final was confirmed.
The 2022 Eugene, Oregon, 200m champion is to swing back into action on Wednesday when she will start the defence of her World Championships half-lap title — and with the fire of the disappointment burning hot, some fast times are expected.
