Sixty-One Years of Wedded Bliss

On January 29, 1962 a soon-to-be 21-year-old and soon-to-be 18-year-old decided to get married, refusing to listen to all the noise around them about what a failure their union would be because they were too young.

Leslie and Lucy grew up together in the small community of Middlesex, St Catherine, until Lucy moved away to live with her aunt in Banberry after her dad passed. Fate brought them back together in 1959 when she visited the community. They wed two years later, ignoring the concerns of the elders who did not believe they were ready for the responsibilities of marriage.

Leslie, according to his children, saw what he wanted and went after it. The union produced nine children, 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

On July 22, 2023, in the cool of Guys Hill, Middlesex District, Leslie and Lucy Wright celebrated 61 years of wedded bliss with a renewal of vows. They certainly had the last laugh!

Present for the festivities were the couples’ nine children, 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, four daughters-in-law, and one son-in-law.

The bride was escorted up the aisle by her youngest grandson TeAndre Burgess whilst the couple’s youngest granddaughter Da’Miyah McAnuff escorted her granddad, the bridegroom.

Festivities continued into the wee hours of the morning with food, music, and dancing at the Wright’s residence in Cox Mountain.

Leslie and Lucy have a couple’s moment during the anniversary celebrations.
Leslie and Lucy’s renewal of vows took place at the Evangelical Church of Christ International, Bethel Temple, Middlesex, St Catherine.
Leslie and Lucy’s grandchildren (from left) Aliyah Thompson, Danae Stewart and Da’Miyah McAnuff were eager to capture highlights of the vows renewal.
Man of the hour Leslie Wright cut a dapper figure as he awaited the arrival of his wife of 61 years, Lucy.
Proud daughter Alexia Wright shares a moment with dad Leslie.
