Rusea’s, Morant Bay stay perfect in d’Cup
LUCEA, Hanover — Former champions Rusea’s High won a fifth-straight game, while Morant Bay High won their fourth consecutive outing in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition on Wednesday.
Despite a number of games being called off due to bad weather or lightning, a number of schools strengthened their positions, including former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Cornwall College, and Frome Technical.
In Lucea, Davalio Gillard scored a hat-trick and Deandre Brown scored the other for Rusea’s High as they beat Cambridge High 4-0 in a Zone B return game.
The win saw Rusea’s High join Cedric Titus High on five wins each.
Morant Bay ran their record to four straight as they beat Robert Lightbourne High 4-2 in their Zone K game. Morant Bay increased their lead to six points over Paul Bogle High who are to face Yallahs High on Thursday.
STETHS rebounded from their 1-1 draw against Munro College on Saturday to beat Sydney Pagon High 9-1 and retake the lead in Zone E. Kenoy Banton and Deandre Campbell both scored braces to lead the scoring in Santa Cruz.
Cornwall College won their third-straight game, beating St James High 2-0. Travis Gordon scored his first in the competition and Deshaun Talbert converted a second-half penalty.
The win saw Cornwall College stay in the lead in Zone A with 13 points, two more than Irwin High who beat Maldon High 2-0, with Leo Campbell scoring both goals.
Stevaughn Spence and Akeem Kangol both scored braces for Frome Technical, who brushed aside Merlene Ottey High 7-0 in the Zone B return game. Frome had won the first-round contest 3-1.
William Knibb Memorial were also big winners, getting by Discovery Bay High 8-0 in their game at Martha Brae in Trelawny.
