I received an article titled ‘National Economic Impact Study for horse industry has September 29 deadline’ from Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association Incorporated, dated September 18. I found it very interesting, strategic, and visionary for the horse racing industry.

The following is an excerpt: “The American Horse Council is currently surveying horse owners and vendors for the 2023 National Economic Impact Study, which most recently was conducted in 2017.

“The purpose of the census is to demonstrate the value of the equine industry in the national and state economies by analysing the direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts of horse ownership, recreation, and equine-related services. The thoroughbred breeding and racing industries are an important part of the overall economic impact, including in Maryland.”

I am asking whether a similar exercise has been done in Jamaica. If not, I am suggesting that a steering committee be set up. The proposed composition could include members from the Thoroughbred Owners’ and Breeders’ Association of Jamaica (TOBA); Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC); Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ); and a member from the Department of Economics, The University of the West Indies (UWI) to do a similar study. Additionally, the committee could also consult with the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association for guidance.

If a study has been conducted, I am asking if a copy could be shared with me.
