Traditional powerhouse Kingston College (KC) marched into the quarter-finals of the ISSA Walker Cup competition with a commanding 3-0 victory over arch-rivals Calabar High at Stadium East on Tuesday, while Jamaica College (JC), Eltham High and Wolmer’s Boys also secured places in the last eight.

KC settled the highly anticipated clash early and never surrendered control, with Kajay Fletcher opening the scoring in the 10th minute before Deshawn Byfield doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, ramming home a rebound in first half stoppage time. The talented Zaire Douse then put the icing on the cake, curling home a beauty in the dying moments.

The result was particularly pleasing for KC coach Jermaine Miller, who said his team adapted well to Calabar’s high-pressing approach.

KC will now face the winner of Wednesday’s quarter-final clash between St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and St Jago High.

At Ashenheim Stadium, JC edged St George’s College 2-1 to book their place in the quarter-finals, continuing what has been an intriguing Walker Cup campaign involving several of the competition’s traditional football powers in a welcomed change of format over the last seven years.

Eltham High produced one of the day’s most emphatic results, hammering Campion College 5-0 to advance in style.

There was also plenty of drama at St Catherine High, where Wolmer’s Boys and the hosts battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation time before Wolmer’s prevailed 5-4 on penalties.

Meanwhile, chaos erupted at Charlie Smith High school after they lost 4-5 to Vauxhall High on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

With the quarter-final places now taking shape, the competition is set for another round of high-stakes games on Wednesday as STATHS take on St Jago, and Manning Cup champions Excelsior High face Waterford High in a game they are expected to win and set up a meeting with Wolmer’s. Mona High and Edith Dalton James are also set for an intriguing battle.
