Frome, Rusea’s, Garvey Maceo & Happy Grove on the cusp

As many as four schools, including former champions Frome Technical, Rusea’s High and Garvey Maceo High, can advance to the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition, with wins this afternoon.

Morant Bay High from Zone K are so far the only ones to have already secured a spot in the next round, but that number could grow after Tuesday’s round of matches.

On Monday, McGrath High took the Zone J lead on goal difference over Dinthill Technical after a 1-0 win over Charlemont High thanks to a 41st-minute goal from Devone Davis.

The win took McGrath High to nine points from five games, two more than Dinthill, whose game against Enid Bennett High was one of several halted by lightning.

Cornwall College’s Braxton Richards (left) gets away from Irwin High’s Ajay Walters during the daCosta Cup Zone A game in Montego Bay on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The game ended 0-0.

Christiana High forced a three-way tie at the top of Zone G after beating Bellefield High 2-0 to join them and Mile Gully High on 12 points.

Belair High are on 15 points and in second place in Zone F after a 2-0 win over Mount St Joseph Catholic on Monday.

On Tuesday, two-time former champions Garvey Maceo High could book their spot from Zone M with a win over Tacius Golding High, but hope Kemps Hill do not get full points from Vere Technical.

Garvey Maceo lead with 13 points from five games, while Vere are second with nine points from four games. Kemps Hill are next with eight points from their five games.

A second win for Frome Technical over Green Island in three days would all but settle the two automatic qualifiers from Zone B. Frome and Rusea’s are the top two teams and are locked on 15 points each. Both would be way ahead of the rest of the pack.

A loss would leave Green Island on the brink of elimination.

Happy Grove High only need a second win this season over Port Antonio High to secure a fourth-straight berth in the second round. They are to meet in a return game this afternoon at Happy Grove .

Happy Grove, who are perfect through their first three games, had beaten Port Antonio High 5-0 in their first meeting.

Also on Tuesday, defending champions Clarendon College will be seeking a sixth-straight win when they take on Kellits High in a Zone H return game. Clarendon College had won the first game 5-0.

Zone A leaders Cornwall College and second-placed Irwin High will meet in return game that could go a far way in deciding the zone winners.

Cornwall have 16 points from six games, two more than Irwin. The Irwin team is last season’s zone winner and has gone 16 games in the zone without a loss.

The two had played out a 0-0 result previously this season.
