Merck issues recall of Banamine due to presence of particulate matter
MERCK Animal Health, known as MSD Animal Health outside of the United States and Canada, is voluntarily recalling batches of Banamine/Banamine-S (Flunixin meglumine injection) 50mg/ml.
Merck chose to make the recall following its observation of particulate matter in specific product batches during routine quality testing.
Trainers and stakeholders are advised that Banamine with the following seven batch numbers and expiry dates have been recalled by manufacturers Merck, and should not be given to horses and other animals:
1) Banamine 100mL, UIN 065474, NDC 00061-0851-03, Batch 3511101, expires December 2024. Distribution dates: May 16, 2023 – August 8, 2023.
2) Banamine 100mL, UIN 065474, NDC 00061-0851-03, Batch 3511104, expires December 2024. Distribution dates: August 4 – 17, 2023.
3) Banamine 250mL, UIN 065476, NDC 00061-0851-04, Batch 3522101, expires December 2024. Distribution dates: July 14 – August 17, 2023.
4) Banamine-S 100mL, UIN 065477, NDC 0061-1838-30, Batch 3511103, expires December 2024. Distribution dates: May 3 – August 16, 2023
5) Banamine 100mL, UIN 065474, NDC 00061-0851-03, Batch 2834102, expires October 2024. Distribution dates: March 6, 2023 – May 3, 2023
6) Banamine 250mL, UIN 065476, NDC 00061-0851-04, Batch 2864102, expires November 2024. Distribution dates: June 21, 2023 – July 11, 2023
7) Banamine-S 100mL, UIN 065477, NDC 0061-1838-30, Batch 2834103, expires October 2024.Distribution dates: March 20, 2023 – May 16, 2023
The batch number and expiry date are located at the bottom right sectoin of each bottle’s label.
Banamine is often the drug of choice for pain relief in horses suffering from colic and therefore its usage extends to horses in all disciplines.
Trainers and stakeholders are advised to return Banamine with these batch numbers to their suppliers or to safely discard it.
