Byron Messia breaks 18-year Billboard Rap Airplay drought

Newcomer Byron Messia’s Talibans has made its way into the top 10 of the Billboard Rap Airplay chart. The song steps up from #11 to #8 in its 16th week on the chart.

This is the first time in 18 years that a song by a Jamaican-born artiste has cracked the Top 10 on the Rap Airplay chart. Sean Paul was the last to do so when in 2005, We Be Burnin peaked at #6.

Sean Paul has to date scored four entries on the Rap Airplay chart. The others include So Fine (#13 in 2009), and Feel It with DJ Felli Fel, T-Pain, Flo Rida and Pitbull which peaked at #23 in 2009.

Prior to Byron Messia, the last Jamaican to earn an entry on the Billboard Rap Airplay chart was Sean Paul. In 2011, Got 2 Luv U featuring Alexis Jordan topped out at #20

Other Jamaicans who have charted on the Rap Airplay chart are Beenie Man (six entries) and Shaggy (two entries).

Still on Talibans, the song continues its upward trajectory on multiple Billboard charts. On the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, the song steps up from 20 to 16, while Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay inches up from 14 to 13. The song, however, backtracks on the Rhythmic Airplay chart falling from 19 to 22.

The remix of Talibans (Talibans II) featuring Burna Boy moves up from eight to seven on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart.

Moving now to the streaming and sales-driven Billboard Reggae Albums chart, Bob Marley and the Wailers are on top for the 197th non-consecutive week with Legend.

Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection by Shaggy remains at #2, while Dutty Classics Collection by Sean Paul holds firm at #3.

Wisdom by Stick Figure is at #4, Greatest Hits by UB40 climbs to #5 and Set in Stone by Stick Figure dips to number six.

Dutty Rock by Sean Paul is steady at #7, while World on Fire by Stick Figure bullets upward to #8.

Byron Messia’s No Love continues to lose steam dropping to #9 and Damian Jr Gong Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock re-enters the chart at #10.

Over to the New York Reggae chart, Damian Marley’s cover of George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord clocks another week in the #1 spot.

Bad Boy Johnny by Tony Roy surges from #13 to #10, while I Shall Be Released by Hezron with Big Youth steps up from #16 to #13.

On the South Florida Reggae chart, The Man of Mine by Marcia J Ball takes over the #1 spot.

Call Him by Kevin Downswell and Bounty Killer glides from #4 to #2, while Celebration Time by 1980s hitmaker Screwdriver moves from #12 to #9.

This week’s new entries are Mama Sey by Yishka at number 23, while Richie Stephens’ cover of David Ruffin’s Statue of a Fool arrives at #24.
