WATCH: Holness embarks on tour of flood-damaged areas
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Sunday morning embarked on a tour to survey damage left behind to sections of the island by heavy rains between Wednesday and Friday night.
Holness, in a post to X late Saturday, said his damage assessment will focus on the most affected areas as the Government moves to address it “as quickly as possible.”
He noted that the parishes of St Catherine, St Andrew, St Thomas, and Portland were most affected, with St Thomas and St Andrew experiencing the brunt of the rains and the subsequent flooding and land slippage.
Communications manager at the National Works Agency, Stephen Shaw told the Jamaica Observer on Saturday that rural St Andrew and St Thomas were badly impacted.
“The areas impacted have been affected by landslides, fallen trees, and we had areas that were flooded islandwide. The assessment continues. We will have a better idea of the cost, in terms of damage, in the week,” Shaw explained.
The heavy rains islandwide were associated with a severe weather system that moved across Jamaica on Friday evening.
