Don G connects with Africa
Because of the strong ties between reggae and Afro Beats, Jamaican artistes have strengthened connections with their West African counterparts. Singjay Don G recently visited Nigeria where he performed on two major shows and did the promotional rounds.
Don G, who lives in Luxembourg, spent three weeks in Nigeria which is the hub of the global Afro Beats movement. He said his trip transcended music.
“Not many of us Jamaicans get the opportunity to return to Africa, but as you know Africa is our home so repatriation is a must, and with the powerful message within my music, for sure the ancestors will make it possible again. I’m looking forward to (visiting) Gambia and Senegal next,” stated Don G.
Most of his time in Nigeria was spent in Lagos, the capital, where he performed at the Felabration 2023 Festival held at Freedom Park in October. Don G also promoted his songs on local radio stations.
He is keen to capitalise on his Nigerian visit in 2024.
“Right now, I’m working on Faith Move Mountains, my first studio album for JamBerchem Empire, while recording some singles for other producers such as More Life Productions and Seltza Music Productions,” Don G disclosed.
Nigerian artistes such as Burna Boy and Wizkid, leaders of the Afro Beats craze, have built a following in Jamaica. In December 2022, Burna Boy drew 20,000 fans to his show at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Originally from St Catherine, Don G has lived in Luxembourg since 2017. While the reggae scene there is not vibrant, he performs on shows in nearby France, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Don G’s EP, You Reap What You Sow, was released by One Tree Records in 2019.
