‘What’s Popping’ to spend four more months behind bars on larceny charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Forty-year-old Steve Mitchell, otherwise called ‘What’s Popping’, who was charged with housebreaking and larceny following an incident back in June 2023, was ordered to spend another four months behind bars when he appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Despite his legal representative arguing that after nine months in prison, ‘What’s Popping’ had learnt his lesson, Senior Parish Judge, Lori-Ann Cole Montague, said she was not convinced.
Mitchell and another man reportedly broke into a premises on Witcombe Road and stole several items valued at about $1 million. He was subsequently arrested and has been in police custody since the incident.
On Tuesday, Mitchell’s Lawyers asked for leniency, arguing that throughout his nine-month imprisonment, his client has expressed remorse and has learnt his lesson. But Montague, disclosing to the Court that the complainant in the case against Mitchell has been receiving threats, said she believes the defendant needs “likkle more time.”
“I am deeply concerned about the threats being made against the complainant by associates of the defendant and I am just not getting the sense that you’re sorry,” said Montague. “At your age, you’re old enough to know right from wrong. You’re 40 years old. I think the most appropriate action in this case would be another term of imprisonment. You need likkle more time.”
Mitchell was subsequently given an additional four months in prison.
