Smart ride brings Rhythm Buzz to Henry Jaghai Trophy
Rhythm Buzz, under a well-calculated ride from jockey Javaniel Patterson, won the $1.25-million Henry W Jaghai OD, JP Trophy feature race on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Rhythm Buzz came from behind horses to win the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over six furlongs (1,200m) by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:13.0 (23.0 x 47.2).
Rhythm Buzz broke off well at the start of the race and raced in fourth place behind KP Choice (Raddesh Roman), Mamma Mia (Robert Halledeen), and W
all Street Trader (Jerome Innis) going into the half-mile (800m) turn.
The Vincent Atkinson-trained Rhythm Buzz, who hugged the inside rails and cut the turn entering the drive, switched to the middle of the track on the outside of runners and got up in time to beat Wall Street Trader and Money Monster (Romario Spencer) at the wire.
Jockey Tevin Foster continued his good form after booting home four winners in consecutive races to share the limelight.
Foster’s winners included Shany Star, who made one move to win the $1.05-million Jaghai Memorial Trophy co-feature, a maiden condition race for native-bred three-year-olds over six-and-a-half furlongs (1,300m). Shany Star, owned by Albert Barrett and trained by Lawrence Freemantle, won the seventh race on the day by 8 ½ lengths ahead of Captain Sparrow (Raddesh Roman) and Brenda Boy (Linton Steadman) in a time of 1:22.1.
Foster’s other winners were Cosmic Force for trainer Ryan Darby in the fifth race; Joy Is Gold for trainer Patrick Lynch in the sixth race; and Posing Already for trainer Robert Pearson in the eighth race. Racing continues at the weekend, with races on Saturday and Sunday.
