Panamanian jockey Osorio gets another crack at maiden win
Panamanian jockey Josue Osorio will have the chance to win his first race on Jamaican soil when he mounts Mamma Mia in this afternoon’s 15th King’s Plate main race at Caymanas Park.
Osorio made his local debut last weekend, receiving a total of eight rides over two days on Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24. On Sunday, his best performance was third aboard the Patrick Lynch-trained Cataba over the straight.
However, the Jason DaCosta-conditioned Mamma Mia is Osorio’s greatest chance of getting off the mark, although he has five other mounts on today’s 10-race card.
Mamma Mia, last year’s 1000 Guineas and Jamaica Oaks Classic races winner, was disappointing as the favourite in the Henry Jaghai Memorial Trophy over six furlongs on March 16. The four-year-old chestnut filly, after prompting the pace for the first part of the race, weakened in deep stretch to finish in fifth position by some 8 ¼ lengths behind Rhythm Buzz and Wall Street Trader.
With a more relaxed pace expected here, and given her fine pace, Mamma Mia is expected to rebound with a win. Mamma Mia came back out of the race and galloped a smooth 50.3 for four furlongs (800m) on Monday, March 25, a clear indication that all is well with her.
The three-year-old and upward Overnight Allowance contest going seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m) is positioned as the ninth event with a post time of 4:45 pm. First race is at 11:40 am.
Of the nine-horse field, Money Monster and Sonny T and Chippy look the likely threats to Mamma Mia here.
Money Monster finished a good third at the races behind Rhythm Buzz in the Henry Jaghai Memorial Trophy over six furlongs on March 16. It was Money Monster’s third outing for the season and so he should be cherry ripe for this.
Sonny T and Chippy is a consistent runner who has been doing well in his races. Sonny T and Chippy came home in second position by a length behind Rhythm Buzz over seven-and-a-half furlongs on January 21. The Spencer Chung trainee has an excellent chance of winning here.
The remaining runners in the line-up are Rani Bangala, Provocativa, Sweet Majesty, Get A Pepsi, Regal and Royal, and All for Love.
