Male student dispels stigma on nursing, says it is his passion
KINGSTON, Jamaica —Ramone Young, a multiple awardee of the Kingston School of Nursing, has a passion for caregiving. So it was no surprise that he ventured into a profession that encompassed his personality of being patient, caring and compassionate.
Young said he fearlessly took on the road of nursing despite the stigma of males in that profession.
The third-year student of the University of Technology, who is one of three male students pursuing nursing, said he will continue to push others, especially males, to get into the profession.
Highlighting that if one has a passion for something it should be followed purposefully, Young said men interested in the profession should follow their dreams.
“I believe if you have a passion and love for a particular profession you should go for it. Nursing should never be stigmatised but rather embraced as there’s no limit to caring,” he told Observer Online.
The Spanish Town native is the president of the University of Technology’s Nursing and Midwifery Association and was elated to once again receive the scholarship from his institution.

He commended the association for giving back and encouraged others who have received it to pass on such kindness when they have completed their course of studies and become employed.
“We who have received grants and scholarships when we become professionals, we should find ways to pass on such kindness,” Young said, highlighting that he is anticipating the day he can also lend a helping hand to those in need.
Confident that upon completing his course of study he will be walking into a job at the hospital, he desires to be employed at the Kingston Public Hospital.
“I know that after graduation I will be going to the Kingston Public Hospital. I have learnt so much and the nurses there are so willing to teach you,” he said.
